It is important to smear a little oil onto replacement sealing rubbers and not to over-tighten a new filter. Not only does this ensure a seal, but it will help with future servicing.

The new filter, a little smear of oil on the rubber seal, little smear of oil on the thread, like so, place it on, gently, start it off by hand and spin it on then, so it just stops. Once it stopped, give it about three-quarters of a turn by hand and no more. Just three-quarters of a turn. And that ensures that when you come to the next service, you can actually get the thing off again.
